As India marks the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap, Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra on Thursday paid tribute to one of the greatest warriors in the Indian history.

Paying tribute to Maharana Pratap, Mr Chandra tweeted, "The entire nation bows to Maa Bharti's son, the protector of the motherland, valiant and brave Maharana Pratap. Valiant warriors like Maharana Pratap will remain an inspiration for every generation of the country for their patriotism, courage and sacrifice."

Born on May 9, 1540, Maharana Pratap was the eldest son of Maharana Udai Singh and Maharani Jaiwanta Bai. Today marks his 479th birth anniversary.

Rajput warrior king Maharana Pratap was engaged in a war with Emperor Akbar when he refused to accept the suzerainty of the Mughals. Maharana Pratap, the ruler of Mewar in modern day Rajasthan, is known for his bravery and courage is still worshipped by many in Rajasthan and also people around the country.

After losing Battle of Haldighati to Mughal forces, Maharana Pratap spent most of his life in the city of Chavand and rebuilt his capital there. A memorial has been built in his name in Rajasthan's Chawand village.
