Political slug-fest erupted in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decided to abstain from the voting in the election for Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

National Conference called the PDP's decision to abstain as another tactical alliance with the BJP, though both parties have ended the coalition in the state.

“The decision of abstaining from voting comes in light of dissolution of coalition with BJP, hence the NDA. Also the UPA didn't approach PDP, therefore after consultations with party leaders and Parliamentarians, it was deemed fit to abstain in party interest (sic)," tweeted Rafi Ahmad Mir, chief spokesman of PDP.

PDP has two members in the Rajya Sabha while the BJP and the Congress have one each from Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference has no member in the Rajya Sabha while it has one MP in Lok Sabha.

PDP’s decision to abstain evoked a sharp response from former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah who accused the party of having a tactical alliance with BJP.

“Till yesterday, Mehbooba Mufti was terming her alliance with the BJP akin to drinking from a cup of poison and today the same Mehbooba Mufti instructed PDP’s two Rajya Sabha MPs to abstain from voting in the election for the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha," said Omar.

Former chief minister noted that the abstention helps the BJP in this tightly contested race. “And goes on to prove that PDP and BJP are still in a tactical alliance that has ulterior and hidden motives to rob the State of its political identity," he said.

On Article 35 A, Omar said PDP was “not coming forward with an unambiguous stand and face because it is a party that has always acted as a Trojan Horse to weaken the State from within.”

“Senior PDP leader Muzaffar Baig is a lawyer in the Supreme Court and despite this fact he is not defending the Article. PDP’s tacit understanding with the powers that be continues despite the party being ditched by their ally," he said.
