After officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) summoned MAV Raju, husband of former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, for questioning on Wednesday, his lawyer Pinaki Bhattacharyya said that he would not be able to appear as he had been admitted to the hospital.

"He has many medical complications and had to be hospitalised on Wednesday morning. We have asked for time from the CID," Bhattacharyya said, without naming the hospital where he was admitted.

On Tuesday, a notice was issued by the CID to Raju asking him to appear at Bhawani Bhaban, the CID headquarters by 12 noon on Wednesday for questioning along with a warning of arrest in case he didn't appear.

CID sleuths raided three places including Raju's residence and from one of them in south Kolkata, recovered Rs 2.4 crore. The caretaker of the house, Rajmongal Singh, had been arrested.

Raju had filed an FIR at Netajinagar Police Station alleging that the raids had been carried out without adhering to any norms and moved Calcutta High Court demanding a CBI inquiry into it. Nishat Parvez, DIG (operations), CID, however said that the raids had been made after following all procedures.

In another development, one Yunus Ali, a cow dealer based in West Midnapore district where Ghosh was the superintendent of police, filed a case at the district court on Wednesday alleging that on 24 September 2016, four police officers including Ghosh had taken away Rs 45 lakh from him. Ali said that he was travelling with the money and met with a car accident near Kharagpur. The then OC of Kharagpur PS, Rajsekhar Pyne, sub inspector Chiranjit Ghosh and another officer Sujit Mondal reached the spot. They seized the bag of money from him and only later did Ali come to know that the cash was not included in seizure list. On Wednesday, he filed a case against all four and the court asked district police to start a case.

Ghosh, who was known for her proximity to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had been at loggerheads with Congress MLA turned TMC Rajya Sabha MP Manas Bhunia. After Bhunia defected to TMC and the day after his wife won the MLA seat vacated by him, Ghosh was removed as the SP of West Midnapore and transferred to a comparatively less important and more of an ornamental post, as the commandant of the third batallion of state armed police at Barrackpore.

Her transfer after being the SP of West Midnapore and Jhargram for over five years had set several speculations afoot. While one of the theories doing the rounds said that she was removed because of her reputation of being an aide of Mukul Roy who had defected from TMC to BJP, many others believed that Bhunia had been pulling the strings from behind the curtains to get even with Ghosh because while Bhunia had been Congress MLA from the district, Ghosh had implicated with murder and rape charges.
