India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday spoke with his American counterpart US Secretary of Defence Dr Mark Esper.

The focus of the talks were India US defence partnership, cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan and abrogation of special status for Jammu and Kashmir.

A defence ministry statement said, "The defence minister raised the issue of cross-border terrorism affecting India and appreciated US support for India's effort to maintain peace and stability in the region."

Calling abrogation of Article 370 "an internal matter of India", Rajnath said it is "aimed at improving growth and economic development, democracy and prosperity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir."

The US Defence secretary, meanwhile, reiterated Washington's stance that India and Pakistan have to resolve all issues bilaterally.

On growing defence engagement, "Both the Ministers expressed happiness at the significant progress in bilateral defence cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen and deepen the relations further."

Singh also invited US companies to invest in the Indian defence manufacturing sector under the flagship 'Make in India' programme. Later this year, India and the US will hold their first-ever tri-service joint exercise and have already taken steps to operationalize LEMOA and COMCASA agreement.

LEMOA and COMCASA are foundational agreements which Washington signs with close allies and increase military interoperability and transfer of equipment.
