Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajanth Singh on Thursday expressed concern over a possible attack being made on BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

The BJP president as well as Modi supporters demanded upgraded security cover for Modi after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) issued a high alert of a possible suicide bomber threat.

"According to the latest information received, there is a serious threat to our prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, and we all are very tensed. I believe that the ruling government should immediately provide him with upgraded security cover to ensure his safety," Singh said.

Reportedly, as per the high alert, the attack may be on the lines of assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The IB reports also stated that Gujarat Chief Minister Modi won't be shot at, and it is likely that a suicide bomber may target him, disguised as a supporter. The alert does not specify the gender of the attacker.

The agencies also suspect that the attack may take place in Modi's own constituencies of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, or Vadodara in Gujarat.

"See, militancy in our country has always been the biggest challenge. I believe that since the past ten years, the ruling Congress-led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government could not address this challenge and could not work on a comprehensive action plan and an effective investigation has also not been conducted so far," Singh added.
