Rajiv Mehrishi, who retired as the Union home secretary last month, will take over as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on Monday. He will take over from Shashi Kant Sharma, who will retire on September 25.

Mehrishi, 62, would be administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday. His appointment has been cleared by the government. He will have a tenure of about three years. As per laid out norms, the CAG is appointed for a term of six years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

The 1978 batch (retired) Indian Administrative Service officer of the Rajasthan cadre Mehrishi completed his two-year fixed term as the home secretary last month. He was chosen as the home secretary by the NDA government the day he was due to retire as the finance secretary. Mehrishi, who hails from Rajasthan, holds Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (UK) and Master of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees from Delhi University.

Sharma who to demit office on Monday, was appointed as CAG on May 23, 2013. The 61-year-old 1976 Bihar cadre IAS officer had replaced Vinod Rai, who superannuated after a five-and-a-half year eventful tenure as the head of the CAG.

Sharma's appointment came at a time when the CAG has come under sharp attack from the government and ruling party for its reports on assessment of Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss in allocation of 2G spectrum. Under Vinod Rai's tenure, the CAG was accused of going beyond its auditing ambit and indulging in analysing policy decisions.
