Arputhammal, the mother of the AG Perarivalan, one of the life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has urged the Tamil Nadu government for the mercy killing of her son and herself, after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the state's plea for the release of the convicts.

“We had fought for the release of my son for the last 27 years. My son is already suffering from various ailments. I don’t want him to live in agony any more. At least kill him to end all his sufferings. After his death, why should I live?," the 71-year-old told DNA.

Kovind has reportedly rejected the Tamil Nadu government’s request to release the seven prisoners, including Perarivalan, in the Rajiv assassination case. The convicts are V. Sriharan alias Murugan, A.G. Perarivalan, T. Suthendraraja alias Santhan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Ravichandran and Nalini.

In the last four years, the Tamil Nadu government has written twice to the Home Ministry to pardon the convicts and release them on humanitarian grounds but it was rejected.

She said she and her family was completely dejected by the President’s decision. “We are eagerly awaiting for his early release and to lead a peaceful life with him. Now all the hopes are gone. We are completely dejected,” she said. Perarivalan came out on parole for the first time in last August to take care of his ailing father at his home in Jolarpet in Vellore district.

Arputhammal slammed the state and the Centre for not releasing her son. She said that Tamil Nadu government was all along telling her that they were awaiting the Centre’s reply. “Now the Centre has rejected its plea. The [state] should use its own power under Article 161 to release her son. Instead, they are keen on writing petitions again and again to the Centre.”

When asked whether she would appeal to Congress president Rahul Gandhi who had told a gathering in Singapore in March that he had completely forgiven his father’s killer, she said that the centre should have released his son based on the statement of Rahul Gandhi. “When the affected family (Rahul Gandhi family) itself pardoned, why the BJP government at the centre is refusing to release?”. She said that she doesn’t want to continue the ordeal any more. “That’s why I seek euthanasia for my son and to myself,” she said.

Tamil Nadu Law Minister C V Shanmugham said that the case pertaining to the premature release of the seven convicts is still pending with the Supreme court. “The state government is firm on the decision taken by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa (on February 19, 2014) to release the seven convicts. We will firmly put forward our stand in the Supreme Court when the case comes up for the hearing,” he said.

Interestingly, Arputhammal on Thursday petitioned minister Shanmugam not to shift Perarivalan from the Puzhal Central Prison until his release. He was shifted to the Puzhal prison two weeks ago to continue his treatment in Rajiv Gandhi General Government Hospital in Chennai.
