After making ambivalent statements on his political plunge, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth on Saturday said that he would take a call on his political entry at an appropriate time.

The actor's comment comes after his brother Sathyanarayana Rao asserting that Rajinikanth would take a final call on the political plunge after consultation with his fans and well-wishers in the coming months.

When asked about his plan to enter politics, Rajinikanth said, "will reveal when the time comes". For the first time, the actor has given a direct reply to a question on his political plunge after dropping hints of his entry while addressing his fans recently. He made the remark at the airport while on his way to Mumbai to start shooting for his next movie Kaala Karikalan from Sunday. "I am leaving to Mumbai to commence shooting on my next film Kaala.

You do your work and let me do my work," he said. When asked about the Centre's new rule banning cattle trade for slaughter purpose, he did not answer.

Buzz over Rajinikanth's political entry has been doing rounds since 1996 when he backed DMK-Tamil Manila Congress alliance to unseat late Jayalalithaa from power. The latest round began when he addressed his fans on the first day of his five-day meet and greet to take an individual photo with his die-hard fans in Chennai on May 15.

Rajinikanth gave rise to the speculations by saying that he has no political aspirations, but "If God wills it, I will enter politics tomorrow." On the last day, the actor who hails from Karnataka asserted that he "is a pure Tamil, you have made me a Tamil." He went on to tell his fans that he would call them when "there is a war. You come then." Though the actor did not give any direct indication of his political plans, the hints are more than enough for his die-hard fans who were seeking his entry into politics since 1996.

Even as the BJP was making all efforts to rope in the actor saying that he was a natural ally, his political entry was opposed by pro-Tamil groups and a couple of political parties including filmmaker turned politician Seeman of Naam Tamilar Katchi and Pattali Makkal Katchi. The actor's fans want him to fill the political vacuum created by the death of former chief minister Jayalalithaa in December last year and the illness that has kept DMK chief M Karunanidhi out of active politics.

Rajinikanth's entry into politics has been the subject of speculations for many years. Since 1967, Tamil Nadu politics has been dominated by those with links to silver screen. Both DMK founder CN Annadurai and his successor M Karunanidhi were well-known story, screenplay and dialogue writers, while AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran and his successor late J Jayalalithaa were famous actors. Karunanidhi's son and party working president MK Stalin also had a brief stint in action.
