Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth on Monday said that he has entered the politics to fill up the vacuum for a good leader citing the demise of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa and ailing DMK president M Karunanidhi.

“Some people are saying that they are coming because of vacuum. Yes, there is a vacuum. A vacuum for a good leader and leadership. There were two great leaders in the state.  Nobody can argue that Jayalalithaa was a great leader and her governance. On the other hand, there was Karunanidhi who kept his party together for 13 long years in the opposition. He is unwell now. I am coming to fill up that vacuum,” Rajinikanth declared to a thunderous applause of over 5000 students and his supporters gathered at the function to unveil a statue of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran at the Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute here.

Rajinikanth who given a rousing reception by his supporters apologised for the inconvenience caused to the public by the erection of banners along the arterial EVR Periyar Salai. “I advise my supporters not to erect banners hereafter as there is a Madras High Court order against it. I apologise for any inconvenience,” he said.

In a politically-charged speech, the superstar said that he believes he would be able to provide a good governance of MGR. Stating that no one would ever become an MGR again, he said that with the support of the people and the technology along with good advisers, he would be able to provide a good governance.

In an apparent dig at his contemporary and another actor turned politician Kamal Haasan, who has launched his own party Makkal Needhi Maiam, Rajinikanth said that despite his clarification, some people still asking questions over spiritual politics. “I have clearly said that spiritual politics is nothing but the politics of dharma based on honesty and probity while devoid of caste and religion. You can also call it as clean politics. Belief in god is also spiritual politics,” he said, asking does Dravidian means no belief in God or is it against cleanliness and casteless politics. “You are going to see spiritual politics soon,” he said. Haasan had said that Rajinikanth’s politics has a hue of saffron in it citing his call for spiritual politics.

Rajinikanth alleged that the AIADMK government did not hold a massive celebration of MGR’s birth centenary with the participation of film industry from where the MGR came as they don’t want any more actors to join politics. Criticising the present political establishment for not dispensing its duties, Rajinikanth said, “The present government and politicians are asking why are actors leaving their makeup and entering politics. When we (politicians) are not taking up their roles as actors. I want to tell them (politicians) we have done our jobs correctly. Since you are not doing your duty I am stepping in.” “I didn't expect the present political parties to welcome me. But why are you discouraging me and others?” the actor-turned-politician asked. He further added that he has learnt a lot about politics following his close relationship with M Karunanidhi, Congress leader GK Moopanar and Cho Ramasamy.

Students should not join politics

Rajinikanth also advised the students not to enter politics while studying. "You should know about the political developments but should not involve in it. Even if I start a political party, you should not join it," he said, coincidentally Kamal Haasan admitted college students in his party on Monday. Rajini said that the students should focus on their education as it is their gateway to the future and also the dream of their parents.

'Learn to speak English for better future'

Stating that English is the medium of instruction in the higher studies, he said that it is imperative for the students to learn English. “Only if we speak English our communication skill will improve. Students should talks with their friends in the English so that they can improve their communication,” he said. In an apparent dig at Kamal Haasan who said that Tamil would grow “if we speak in that language”, Rajinikanth said that the Tamil language would grow only if Tamilians go up in their life. Citing the example of Google CEO Sundar Pichai and late President APJ Abdul Kalam, he said that they made Tamils proud by going out of Tamil Nadu and succeeding in their career. He also recalled how he struggled in the high school when he was shifted to an English medium school.
