Controversial bureaucrat Rajeev Rautela, who was in the eye of the storm when as the Gorakhpur district magistrate (DM) he reportedly shunted the media out of the counting centre of the Lok Sabha bypoll, has been transferred to Uttarakhand in a change of cadre.

He was on March 17 transferred from Gorakhpur and was made the new divisional commissioner of Devipatan division.

Rautela, a Provincial Civil Service (PCS) officer of the 1982 batch, was promoted to the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) in 2002.

According to an order of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) of the Union government, his cadre has been changed under Section 73(2) of the UP Reorganisation Act, 2000.

“The Central Government drawing powers conferred under Section 73(2) of the UP Reorganisation Act, 2000 hereby allocates Shri Rajeev Rautela, who was working in connection with the affairs of Government of Uttar Pradesh in the cadre of Provincial Civil Services (Executive Branch) immediately before  09.11.2000 and was recommended for allocation to Uttarakhand by the State Advisory Committee [S.No.12 Part (V)] in its meeting dated 04.12.2002, to Uttarakhand with effect from 09.11.2000,” the order dated March 16 said.

Rautela is known to be a close associate of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and was hand-picked by him as Gorakhpur DM.

Rautela had escaped any scrutiny following the death of over 70 children at a state-run Gorakhpur hospital, allegedly due to Oxygen supply.

The Allahabad High Court on December 15, 2017 had ordered Rautela’s suspension in a case relating to illegal mining on the Kosi river, but the government was yet to take any action against him.
