After one and a half years of rigorous training, country’s first three female fighter pilots will be commissioned in the IAF,  two months later.

It is a coincidence that in the presence of the first lady defence minister, Flight Cadet Mohana Singh, resident of Khetpura village of Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Avni Chaturvedi of Madhya Pradesh and Bhawna Kanth will take the responsibility as fighter pilots.

After her grandfather and father, Mohana Singh will be seen flying fighter plane of Indian Air Force. Flight cadet Mohana Singh, Avni Chaturvedi and Bhawna Kanth, selected for the first batch, are taking the final stage training on Hawk aircraft in Bidar, Karnataka. After completing the training by the end of this month, they will be seen flying  fighter aircraft like Sukhoi. Mohana Singh was selected as a female fighter pilot on June 18, 2016.

Notably, her grandfather Laduram Jat, was awarded the Veer Chakra for showing bravery in  India-Pakistan war. Laduram Jat was the fighter gunner of the Air Force’s Aviation Research Centre. Mohana did her schooling from Airforce school of Delhi and completed BTech in Electronic Communication from Amritsar’s Global Institute of Management and Emerging Technology. Her father, Pratap Singh is a warrant officer in Indian Air Force. Previously, Pratap Singh was a flight instructor in Bidar, Karnataka, where Mohana took the training of fighter planes. He is confident that his daughter will be a skilled fighter pilot.

Air Chief Marshal, BS Dhanoa has full confidence in these budding pilots due to the strong and skilled training given to them. He said that the three female fighter plane pilots are no less than their male counterparts. With around 1,500 women employees, women in Air Force have been pilots since 1991, however they have been flying transport aircraft or helicopters. The Ministry of Defense decided in 2015 that women will be given the opportunity to become fighter pilot on experimental basis for five years. Mohana Singh, Avni and Bhawna were selected as first women fighter pilots in June last year.  And now, the three will be commissioned in the presence of first woman
defense minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
