Tension prevailed in Bharatpur after Deeg-Kumher MLA Vishvendra Singh, an erstwhile royal and Congress candidate, had an altercation with Bharatpur Superintendent of Police, Kesar Singh Shekhawat over the issue of security of strong room where EVM machines are stored.

The SP reportedly directed his guards to shoot Singh, which escalated the tension following which additional forces have been deployed in the area. The state election department has taken cognizance of the issue and the SP concerned has been sent on leave. However the SP has refuted all the charges, terming them as baseless.

Singh got information that the main entrance to the strong room at a college building was left unguarded thus allowing anyone access to the EVMs. Also, Singh came to know from RLD candidate Ashok Garg that a vehicle without a registration number had arrived in the premises of the strong room.

Having apprehensions over replacement of EVM machines, which were reported in Madhya Pradesh too, Singh with his kin reached the spot. However, heated arguments were exchanged between Singh and SP Shekhawat.

Singh alleged that the SP who was in an inebriated state instructed his guards to fire upon him (SIngh). “I had raised concerns over the security of the strong room as one entrance was left guarded. The SP was in an inebriated state and instructed his guards to shoot me. On my complaint the SP has been sent on leave and I have also lodged a complaint against him. The SP has also registered a FIR against me. I took the issue with the senior police officers and now I am satisfied with the process,” said Singh.

Meanwhile, the SP has refuted Singh’s allegations and termed them as baseless. “They were objecting on leaving an entrance unguarded. We argued that that entrance was meant for the students to enter, but Singh along with his supporters threatened, scuffled with the police and even thrashed a CCTV camera. He did not listen to me and collector Sandesh Nayak who was also present on the spot. The vehicle that he was referring to is acquired for supplying food to the security guards,” said Shekhawat, while adding that it was Singh who was in an inebriated condition and not him.

According to sources, on Singh’s complaint the security has been upgraded in the college premises and the SP has excused himself from counting. The SP has shot off a letter to IG Bharatpur range Malini Agarwal requesting her for five days leave (December 10-15) which has been accepted. Meanwhile the state election department has taken cognizance of the matter and sought a report from the collector. On Sunday, Singh had a meeting with the collector and the IG over the issue.
