It’s the desert belt of Rajasthan. But, Marwar is suddenly turning too hot to handle for the BJP in the cold month of November.

The party which is already facing a lot of heat over the non-inclusion of names in the first list of candidates, is seeing momentum building up against it choices on seats that are critical in this part of the state.

In Jodhpur, party workers and leaders have started protesting against its Soorsagar candidate Suryakanta Vyas. Vyas, an octogenarian candidate who has represented the    constituency for several terms now is popularly known as jiji bai (elder sister). The locals are miffed over party repeating an elderly candidate and denying a young face a shot at the polls.

The protesting workers met to chalk out a strategy against the ageing BJP candidate. It is noteworthy that Suryakanta Vyas had issued notice to the ten BJP leaders, while contesting the last election. Because of this, there is a strong resentment among a section of leaders.

Vyas, who has won two consecutive elections on the Soorsagar seat, appealed to the workers and the locals alike to help her win the elections. In a warm, emotional pitch, she is terming this her last election of her life and is seeking the support of the partymen.

Ticket claimant Ghanshyam Vaishnav said that despite working for her in the elections last time, Suryakanta had issued him notice. He, however, said he won’t be going against the party in the assembly polls.

On the other hand Nagaur MLA Habiburrahman who has been denied a ticket is believed to be in the process of joining the Congress. Meanwhile, Dr Priyanka Choudhary, one of the stronger candidates for the Barmer constituency, has resigned from the post of UIT chairperson. She is  Barmer’s late leader Gangaram Chaudhary’s granddaughter. Chaudhary had played a pivotal for years in the politics of western Rajasthan.

In Barmer, the last assembly elections, the BJP had given ticket to Priyanka Choudhary, but despite the Modi wave, Mevaram of the Congress was victorious here. This time too Priyanka was claiming the ticket, but BJP  has instead fielded its sitting MP from Barmer, Colonel Sonaram.

The move has irked Priyanka Chaudhary so much that she resigned from the post of UIT chairperson. It is worth mentioning that Priyanka did not respond to any queries on Monday, the day after the party came out with its first list of candidates.

The BJP government had appointed her the UIT chairperson after she was defeated by the Congress candidate in 2013 polls. Confident about the ticket, Priyanka started the campaign in the city but she did not get one. After the rebellion, this family is now preparing to fight the election on its own. Several rounds of meetings of supporters of Gangaram Chaudhary are already underway. Supporters have started gathering at her house.

Jiji Bai In Trouble

Vyas, who has won two consecutive elections on the Soorsagar seat, appealed to the workers and the locals alike to help her win the elections. In a warm, emotional pitch, she is terming this her last election of her life and is seeking their support.
