Keenness on part of candidates to file nomination papers on auspicious days as per the Hindu calender, resulted in deserted offices of returning officers on Monday — the first day of filing nomination papers for the Rajasthan Assembly elections. Despite declaration of names of 131 candidates by the BJP, which amounts to nearly 65 per cent seats, only two candidates from the ruling party filed the papers on Monday. Over all 16 candidates filed their nominations on Monday.

Most candidates are likely to file their nominations on November 19, the last day of filing papers, which happens to fall on the occasion of Dev Uthani Ekadashi as it is believed that Lord Vishnu wakes up on this day, making it auspicious.

"We invoke the gods before starting any work. On this day Lord Vishnu awakens, hence it is a good day to begin new work, be it marriage or business. Most of the candidates will file papers on this day. I was consulted by a number of candidates whom I advised to file papers on Dev Uthani Ekadashi," said Pundit Rajesh Yogiraj, an astrologer.

In 2013, November 13, which was a day after the nomination process ended, was one of the most auspicious occasions and thus led to woe and disappointment in a number of candidates.

This year, they hope to avail good fortune, which this day is believed to bring with it. Apart from Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Tuesday and Wednesday are the other two auspicious days that the people in Rajasthan prefer when it comes to start new work. Therefore it is expected that the candidates might queue up to file the nomination papers on these days too.

Of the 16 candidates who filed their nomination papers on Monday two were from BJP and the rest were mostly independent candidates.
