Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLTP) has claimed victory on three constituencies while its candidate came second on two others. The party announced a couple of months before the election has been able to strike success in its first strike.
Winners from RLTP include party president Hanuman Beniwal who retains his seat from Khinvsar constituency in Nagaur district and Indira Devi from Merta constituency in the district. Another party candidate Pukhraj from Bhopalgarh constituency in Jodhpur also was able to maintain lead till last round of counting.
Even as most of its candidates were unable to draw even 10 per cent votes, the party had its presence registered at several districts. The party candidates gained considerable votes in the home district of Beniwal, while few also came runner up on several constituencies in other districts. The RLTP has field candidates on 58 seats and even a marginal success rate for RLTP has come as individual political gain for Beniwal, who has been an independent MLA since separating from BJP.
Beniwal identifies himself from a farmer background and has been a spontaneous and unpredictable politician. His boldness resulted in differences with BJP and Congress leaders, it earned him support of large number of youth from Nagaur and other districts of western Rajasthan. In reflection of the spontaneous attitude, Beniwal has kept either of the parties in anticipation of his move before he announced his own political party just before the elections. He had vehemently campaigned across the state and held several massive rallies to garner public support before he revealed his political intentions at a rally in Jaipur in October.
A staunch opponent of Vasundhara Raje, Beniwal had been a natural ally for those falling out of BJP following differences with Raje. In last elections, he had supported the Nationalist People Party (NPP) of Kirodi Lal Meena and teamed up with another BJP rebel Ghanshyam Tiwari and his Bharat Vahini Party in the present elections. While Kirodi returned to BJP before the recent elections and Tiwari’s party faced a devastating defeat, Beniwal as sole star campaigner of his party has been able to keep alive the optimism for a third front in Rajasthan.
