Rajasthan assembly election result: Inflicting crushing defeat on ruling Congress, BJP get absolute majority

The state continued its 20-year-old swing record as power returned to the BJP after the Congress was thumped in the desert state.

On super Sunday for the states in India, the BJP raced to a win in Rajasthan as they literally buried the ruling Congress party with an overwhelming win.

BJP secured a total of 162 seats while congress stood at 21 seats thereby paving way for the saffron party's governance in the state. The remaining 17 seats were won by other parties. 

Congress was decimated in Rajasthan, and could be left with only 21 seats in the 200-member house. Officials counting votes in the state said the BJP could win as many as 142 seats earlier.

Lead by Vasundhara Raje the former CM of the state the BJP win in the state has ensured that the 20-year-old history on Rajasthan which always votes alternatively for the Congress and BJP was kept alive.

* In Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's home district, BJP win 9 out of 10 seats. Read more.

* Inflicting a crushing defeat on ruling Congress, BJP today got an absolute majority in the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, winning 121 out of 145 seats results for which have been declared so far. Read more.

* Election officials said that till 4pm, BJP won 121 seats, Congress 14, Independents 5, while other parties and NPP got 2 each. BSP has won from one seat.

* State BJP president and party's chief ministerial candidate Vasundhara Raje won from Jhalarpatan defeating Congress candidate Meenakshi Chandrawat with a margin of 60,896.

* Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot won Sardarpura seat by defeating his nearest rival Shambhusingh Khetasar of BJP by a margin of 18,478 votes.

* BJP candidate Narpat Singh Rajvi won Vidhyadhar Nagar seat of Jaipur by defeating his nearest rival Vikram Singh (Congress) by a margin of 37,913 votes.

* BJP's Bahadur Singh won Weir (SC) seat in Bharatpur district by defeating Om Prakash (Congress) with a margin of 13,423 votes.

* Rajasthan BJP president Vasundhara Raje on Sunday romped home from Jhalarpatan constituency defeating Meenakshi Chandrawat of the Congress by a margin of 60896 votes in the state assembly election.

* Poll in respect of AC No 22-Churu (Rajasthan) has been adjourned due to death of BSP candidate, Shri Jagdish.

* Jubilant over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s impressive show in the Rajasthan assembly elections, chief minister aspirant Vasundhara Raje Scindia on Sunday said that party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s magic was dominating the poll results in all four states.

"Modi is a very big factor. People have seen what he has done in Gujarat," she told media.

* Ashok Gehlot, the outgoing chief minister of Rajasthan, attributed the thorough rout of his party, the Congress, to a negative campaign by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“We have failed in our bid to showcase the development we had carried out in the state,” said Gehlot, after trends showed the BJP heading for a landslide win.

* Gehlot also accused the BJP of spreading lies during the poll campaign.
