A two-month-old baby died of suffocation after the door of the ambulance, which was taking him to a hospital, got jammed for two hours. The parents from Bihar had landed at the railway station in Raipur for treatment of the newborn for a heart ailment.

From the station, an ambulance came to BR Ambedkar hospital  — the biggest hospital in the state. Upon reaching, the driver struggled to open the lock on the door, but could not do so. It took two hours for a mechanic to arrive and fix the lock, but by then, the infant had died due to suffocation since there were no oxygen cylinders available in the ambulance either. To make matter worse, the inconsolable parents were also not provided with a hearse van and they had to take the deceased boy in an auto-rickshaw to the cremation ground.

Reportedly, when the father of the child, Ambika Kumar, tried breaking the glass window of the ambulance, he was allegedly warned that he could not damage government property and had to wait for the door to be opened. Later, when the staff failed to find a way in, a glass screen behind the driver’s seat was broken and the baby was pulled out, but it was too late and the baby was declared dead.

The BJP MLA from the area, Srichand Sundarani, said that the incident was serious and negligent, but added that the hospital and health department cannot be held responsible for the negligence. Meanwhile, former MLA Kuldeep Juneja, demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim’s family along with legal action.

Failed Transfer

The baby was picked up from the Raipur railway station to be transferred to BR Ambedkar hospital.  There, it was discovered that the lock on the door was jammed. The child suffocated in the time it took to rescue him.
