The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a red alert for several districts of Karnataka and Kerala even as heavy rains lashed coastal Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Gujarat.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places over West Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Gujarat region, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, West Rajasthan and, Karnataka,” the IMD said.

Strong winds, reaching 40-50 kilometres per hour, were likely to prevail over the north, central & southwest Arabian Sea, central and south Bay of Bengal and along and off West Coast and West Bengal-Odisha-Andhra coasts and the Andaman Sea. The IMD further advised the fishermen not to venture into these areas.

In Kerala, the Indian Meteorological Centre, Trivandrum, issued a red alert for Idukki, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts of Kerala, which denotes the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, directing the state authorities and people to ‘take action’. An orange alert was issued for Thrissur, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasargod districts for Thursday, which entails likelihood of heavy rainfall and directs authorities to remain prepared. Two Army columns were moved to Wayanad and Virajpet to assist rescue and relief operations being carried out by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

The IMD issued a red alert for Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada coastal district for Thursday. The state government shut down schools, colleges, and Anganwadi in Kodagu, Dharwad, Mangaluru, Hassan, Belagavi, Mysuru, Karwar and Udupi districts for Thursday and Friday in view of red alert announced by respective district authorities due to incessant rainfall. More than 90 people were evacuated from 13 villages in Kodagu district and sheltered in relief camps due to flooding following heavy rainfall.

The rescue effort was done by teams of NDRF and SDRF. The outflow from the reservoirs of the Cauvery and Kabini basin caused the inundation of several villages and farmlands in Kodagu. “We have 18 families in our village, our houses have been entirely surrounded by the water, we have been rescued and brought to this relief centre, where we are being provided with food and drinking water,” said a resident from Karadigodu village.

Incessant rainfall led to flooding in parts of Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday and locals were evacuated to safer places. The Sabari river was flowing at a critical level and if more rains persist then the flooding may worsen in the area.

People have been evacuated from the lower areas and taken to safe places. The district administration and police were on a high alert.

“All important roads in the district have been shut down for vehicular movement. The roads which connect Sukma to Bastar, Telangana and Odisha have been shut down,” Shalabh Sinha, Superintendent of Police, Sukma said. The coming 24 hours will be critical in view of the increasing water levels.

Incessant rains triggered by a deep depression severely affected the normal life in several parts of Odisha. In Rayagada, four panchayats of Kasipur block were disconnected with other parts of the state, after a bridge near Kucheipadar was washed away. The railway service was also stopped. Around 650 people have been evacuated from the block and moved to safe shelters after the road connecting Kashinagar to Kidigan in the Gajapati district has been flooded, affecting movement on the road.
