Rains continue to pour down, wreak havoc

Parts of Ahmedabad and Rajasthan were inundated with heavy showers; affected rescue operations in both places leaving people stranded

The incessant rains since Wednesday night saw Ahmedabad receiving the highest rainfall on a single day in July since 2014. The city received 200.30mm rainfall till 6 pm on Thursday, 88.8 mm short of the 288.1 mm on July 30, 2014, as per the data provided by the control room of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Experts feel the city may break the all-time record for the month, which is 952.5mm recorded in 1905.

Wednesday night's downpour stretched to Thursday early morning, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Several office-goers had to turn back half way, unable to proceed on waterlogged roads, with some of them under nearly 3-ft water and a few of them severely damaged. Low-lying areas were submerged.

With heavy waterlogging in most roads, the city remaine virtually locked in. While several offices declared a closed holiday, schools and colleges have been directed to remain closed till Saturday.

The district administration, in a press release issued on Thursday, said around 10,000 people were evacuated from more than 65 villages in the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Atota of 14 houses collapsed in the eastern part of the city.

However, there were no deaths reported.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani surveyed the Nikol area on a boat and people here were seen wading through chest-deep water. According to the Met department, city has recorded 24 rainy days so far this month, against the average 11.5 days for July. "Looking at the current weather pattern, we are expecting three more days of good rainfall this month," said Jayanta Sarkar, Met director, Ahmedabad.

Road caves in 12-feet in Vadaj

Several roads were damaged across the city, with the biggest cave-in reported at Vadaj area, where a portion the road next to Supath complex caved in 12 feet. AMC officials dubbed it the biggest cave-in of this monsoon season. Roads outside Teen Darwaja, a heritage structure were also damaged by the rains.
