Continuous downpour across the national capital paralysed traffic and threw life out of gear on Tuesday. Waterlogging, choked drains and vehicle breakdowns led to massive traffic jams across the city.

All arterial routes turned into water bodies, bringing traffic movement to a standstill for hours. While the bordering areas of the city like Badarpur, Dhaula Kuan and Delhi – Gurgaon Expressway were completely blocked, traffic crawled within the city on all arterial roads, including the Ring Road and the Outer Ring Road.

Office goers were the worst hit as they were caught midway. South and Central Delhi faced the maximum brunt of traffic jams. Serpentine queues of vehicles were reported from AIIMS, Moolchand, Ashram, Dhaula Kuan, Moti Bagh, Safdarjung, IIT, Hauz Khas, Mehrauli and Badarpur till late afternoon. Waterlogging was reported from South Extension, Niti Bagh, Masjid Moth and Green Park that aggravated the problems of the area residents in general and pedestrians, in particular.

“Vehicles did not move for more than 40 minutes. It is one of the worst traffic commotions this monsoon,” said Rajiv Rai, a motorist who was stuck at the Chirag Dilli intersection on the BRT corridor.

The downpour led to heavy waterlogging under the IP Flyover and ITO Chungi that slowed down vehicular movement adding to commuters’ woes. Traffic moved at snail’s pace on the Vikas Marg that connects East Delhi to central localities of the city. Traffic jams and waterlogging were also reported from Hauz Rani, Lajpat Nagar, MB Road, Qutub Minar metro station, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Rajghat, Sarita Vihar flyover, Hanuman Setu, Chirag Delhi and Badarpur.

The ever-congested ITO intersection was completely blocked that led the jam stretch up to Tilak Marg, Vikas Marg and Delhi Gate. Shanti Van, Rajghat, Nizamuddin, Sarai Kale Khan, New Delhi, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Daryaganj and other parts of the Old Delhi area remained waterlogged throughout the day and stalled the traffic on these roads.
