The Passenger Reservation System (PRS), will automatically allot these vacant berths, following which the passenger will get an SMS on registered mobile number indicating the coach and berth number allotted.
In a move that is going to help lakhs of commuters, the railways decided to introduce a mechanism whereby seats that lie vacant at the originating station of a train, would be re-allotted to wait listed passengers at smaller stations en route. These seats usually go waste or are allotted by the ticket checkers to passengers who approach them. According to statistics, about 3 lakh seats go unutilised every year.
"Once the second chart of a train is made, the seats vacant at the originating station will get transferred to the next station so that wait listed passengers can avail it. It will be of great help to passengers who board from smaller stations and augment fair play with regard to seat allocation," explained an official.
Presently, passengers boarding from such stations get a confirmed ticket only against cancellation of any ticket from that station which hampers their chance of availing one. This new system will change all that," said an official.

"This is a commendable move that will enhance the capacity of the passenger reservation system in such a way that a train seat never goes waste. With the country becoming economically stronger, the travel patterns of people are also changing and even commuters belonging to lower income groups want to travel on reserved seats. This will ease the pressure in a big way," said an official.
