Railways all set to provide 4 lakh jobs in next 2 years: Piyush Goyal

Facing a tough situation on the job front, the Modi government is looking at the Railways as a major job provider. The Railways is in the process of providing as many as four lakh jobs in the next two years.

Addressing mediapersons here, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said, "Last year, the Railways has started the process of giving employment to about 1.50 people. Today, there are 1.32 lakh requirements in the Railways. And about 1 lakh people will retire in the next two years."

"Further, new job opportunities for 2.25-2.50 lakh people have been created. So Indian Railway, in a way, is in the process of providing 4 lakh jobs," Goyal said.

"We have planned in advance so that no posts will remain vacant in railways anymore. As and when retirements happen, the posts will be filled," he said.

The 1.32 lakh fresh recruitment will be done in two phases, the Railway Minister said adding the first phase recruitment of will be initiated in February-March this year and completed by April-May next year. The second phase of recruitment of approximately 99,000 personnel will be initiated against vacancies arising out of retirements, he added.

Goyal said Railways will be the first government department to implement the 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker section (EWS) in the general category.

"Railways will be the first government department to implement the 10 per cent quota for the EWS category under the new amendment in which over the next two years, 23,000 jobs will be reserved for them," the Railway Minister said.
