Amid speculations on whether the Congress has supported West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Brigade Parade Ground rally, AICC president Rahul Gandhi wrote a letter to Mamata extending his support to the alliance.

In the letter, the Congress president said that powerful forces across the country were fanned by the anger and disappointments of hundreds of millions of Indians who saw through the false promises and lies peddled by the Modi government. He said that the people of Bengal had been at the forefront of defending the ideals of the country. "I extend my support to Mamatadi on this show of unity, and hope that we send a powerful message of a united India together," the letter read.

Leaders of Congress West Bengal unit, however, said that it would not change their stand against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state. "In Uttar Pradesh, the SP and BSP have joined hands. Congress will field candidates in all the seats there but have supported the alliance against BJP. The case is similar here. If the AICC chief has written to Mamata it does not mean that our stand in Bengal against the TMC changes," said state unit president Somen Mitra.

Asked if they would be attending the rally, he said, "West Bengal Congress unit leaders have not been invited in the first place so the question of attending it does not even arise," Mitra said.

Sources said that senior Congress leader and leader of the Opposition at the Parliament Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Manu Singhvi will attend the TMC rally on Saturday and ahead of that they would meet Bengal Congress leaders at the party headquarters.

"I don't know whether Singhvi will come or not but I have been told that Kharge will meet Bengal Congress leaders ahead of going to the rally," Mitra added. Asked if the state party leaders will give him any suggestion about his speech there, he said, "He is a senior leader and is competent enough. He does not need any suggestion."
