The countdown to Rajasthan's Cabinet formation has begun. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot are expected to fly to New Delhi to deliberate upon the names of new ministers in the Cabinet, and take it up with Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Over a dozen ministers are expected to take oath as Cabinet and state ministers.

Given that Lok Sabha elections are due in five-six months, the party high command is expected to consider caste and regional factors before selecting names of the ministers. The Cabinet is expected to have equal representation of Jats, Rajput, Gurjars, Meenas and Brahmins, while each region is expected to contribute a maximum of two ministers.

Pilot, who went to the CMO to inspect his chamber, told media persons that deliberations on the Cabinet will take place soon in New Delhi. "Cabinet formation will be decided at the AICC office New Delhi after consulting with Rahul Gandhi," said Pilot, while declining to reveal what portfolios he would be getting. "It is between me and the CM," he said.

He claimed that promises made in the party manifesto will be implemented in letter and spirit, including farm loan waiver.

Meanwhile, sources say that Pilot could get plum portfolios like UDH and home department, while finance and department of personnel are expected to be held by Gehlot himself. The old team which served as minister to Gehlot in his second term could make a comeback. Gehlot is likely to decide for himself whether he picks them as Cabinet and state ministers, or if he goes in for an entirely new team.

Who Gets What

Party sources said that CM Ashok Gehlot is likely to keep finance and the department of personnel for himself, while deputy CM Sachin Pilot may get sought-after portfolios like UDH and home department.
