Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said Babasaheb Ambedkar's dream of abolishing the caste system remained a dream after many years of independence. He was speaking in Mhow, the birthplace of Dr Ambedkar.

Rahul Gandhi is in Mhow to commence Congress' celebration of Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary.

"Babasaheb's dream of abolishing the caste system is incomplete. The Constitution has been in place for years, but casteism still exists," said Rahul.

Praising Ambedkar, Rahul added that "Babasaheb Ambedkar belonged to everyone, not just the weak. We see his influence everywhere today. His life teaches us that change is not easy, it takes time". He also said that Ambedkar had relentlessly fought against casteism and brought hope to the lives of many people.

Referencing the IIT Madras controversy and taking a dig at the government, Rahul said "When voices are stifled, it shows that some people's rights are being taken away. Until this happens, the nation cannot change".

Hailing the Indian Constitution for a 'One Man One Vote' law, the Gandhi scion said it had changed the face of Indian society.
