The Bhartiya Janata Party on Thursday launched an attack on Congress President Rahul Gandhi for calling Tipu Sultan a symbol of communal harmony.

The Congress leader's remark came to a question on Tipu’s association with the Hindu mutt during his visit to Sringeri Sharadamba Peeta. According to a report, Rahul was impressed when told that the ruler had helped the temple during its hour of crisis.

Gandhi, who is on a two-day visit to poll-bound Karnataka, visited Sharadamba temple in Sringeri Mutt and also interacted with the students of the Rajiv Gandhi Sanskrit University

KPCC spokesperson K Diwakar who accompanied the Congress leader said "Rahul had asked on Tipu’s connection with the mutt. I told him about a letter Tipu had written to the then seer of the mutt and the donations the ruler had made. Rahul was impressed by this historical event and lauded Karnataka for being an example of the communal harmony.”

Reacting to Rahul Gandhi's remark, Union Minister Ananth Kumar said that Rahul Gandhi and Siddaramaiah are engaged in vote-bank politics.

"Unfortunate that Rahul Gandhi and Siddaramaiah are engaged in vote-bank politics and communal-disharmony politics. Tipu Sultan, known for tyranny and oppression of Hindus is black chapter in Karnataka's history," Ananth Kumar said.

The minister also said that they may celebrate Tughlaq festival also.

Last year, the chief minister also defended the state government's decision to celebrate the birth anniversary of 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.

Ahead of the election in the 224-member assembly in Karnataka, the state has witnessed frequent visits by national leaders, from both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

While the ruling Congress is trying to retain power in Karnataka, the BJP is eyeing to seize the southern state from it. Earlier, the Congress had dethroned the BJP in Karnataka in 2013.
