When a union of sanitation workers of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation are protesting against failure of salary payment by the government, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi interacted with them on Friday morning.

Rahul met the sanitation workers at East Delhi MCD office. on Friday and heard their complaints out.

After the interaction, Rahul Gandhi said, "You go to the Delhi Government, it says Centre is responsible. You go to the Centre, it says Delhi Government is responsible. These are all excuses and you will not get anything till you show your strength. Dharna is the way to go. And I want to make it clear that I will take your responsibility. I want to give whatever strength I have to you. I have time. You tell me and I will stay here for one, two or even 10 hours. This step you have taken is in the right direction. You will not get anything by asking. You have to organise and show your strength,"

At the interaction, slogans of "Hamara PM kaisa ho, Rahul Gandhi jaisa ho" were raised.

Both North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) have been cash-strapped, unable to pay salaries of many employees. A section of the striking sanitation workers have lately been protesting against the AAP dispensation after the corporations held Kejriwal government "responsible" for their financial woes.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced that his government will release pending salaries of sanitation workers, doctors and teachers of two municipal corporations for April and May, virtually ending the standoff between AAP and BJP over the issue.

Kejriwal also said that he was willing to go along with all the Mayors and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seek release of funds. "He (PM) has given money to Mongolia, I am sure if we all can go and tell our situation he will also help us for one year."

With the sanitation workers on a strike, there are huge garbage pile up seen in East Delhi.
