Equipped with the latest statement by Dassault Aviation CEO Eric Trappier that the joint venture with Reliance represents only 10 per cent of the offset obligations in the Rafale deal, the BJP stepped up its attack on the Congress on Friday.

Trappier's statement came a day after Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman landed in France to hold talks with her counterpart Florence Parly to find ways to deepen strategic cooperation between the two countries.

The Congress has been alleging that 50 per cent of the Rs 58,000-crore deal, which is Rs 29,000 crore will go to Anil Ambani's Reliance Defence.

Launching his attack, Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal singled out Congress president Rahul Gandhi describing him as a "serial liar" who twisted the narrative to hide the fact that his party is an issueless party.

Rubbishing Congress' allegations, Goyal said Rahul Gandhi was peddling lies after lies as the Congress has no other option but to somehow tarnish the Modi government that has done good work for the country's development.

"We have a gentleman manufacturing fake news and then trying to spread it... The Congress is an issueless party, their leadership cannot understand basic figures, basic elementary facts," said Goyal.

Asserting that Dassault Aviation CEO has confirmed choosing a particular company of their own volition with which their discussions and contracts have been persisting since 2012, Goyal accused the Congress of trying to deflect attention from its own misdeeds of concealing the transaction earlier.

He alleged that the French side was not willing to give business to Sanjay Bhandari, a close associate of the Congress' first family.

"One wonders who this gentleman is. What are his relations with the first family of the Congress. What are the angularities due to which the Congress decided to compromise national security to drop the entire procurement just because an associate of their family was not probably being entertained," Goyal alleged.

The Congress rebutted the allegations as a bundle of lies crafted by the BJP to somehow get out of the web of a scam.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera questioned the locus standi of Piyush Goyal doing the press conference when he himself is seeped in allegations of corruption.

"All our questions are based on facts...The country needs factual answers, we don't need your adjectives for Rahul Gandhi," Khera said.

"We are simply asking you come out with the actual price. The joint declaration says that Rafale that are being bought are of same configuration as approved and tested by the Indian Air Force. Why are you running away from a JPC probe that will unveil the truth," Khera asked.
