It should sound a warning bell to the Congress when the AICC President Rahul Gandhi had to cancel his scheduled programmes in two assembly segments of his parliamentary constituency Amethi following protest from people and the BJP workers on Tuesday.

On the second day of his visit, Rahul had to divert his route and leave his vehicle at Mushafirkhana and walk on foot to reach Gauriganj where he was to address a meeting, hold padyatra and visit a local Hanuman temple for puja. But BJP workers and some locals held a strong protest to oppose his visit at Gauriganj.

They raised anti-Congress and ‘Rahul Gandhi murdabad’ slogans provoking the Congress supporters to indulge in free for all as soon as Rahul arrived at Gauriganj.  Supporters of both parties clashed with one another in the presence of the AICC President forcing the police to lathicharge. A few local leaders and workers were detained by the police.

Both the SPG and police had tough time ensuring security and safety of Rahul Gandhi when tempers ran high from both sides. Sensing that situation may go out of hand, the welcome ceremony and other programmes at Gauriganj were then cancelled and Rahul moved on to Jais in Tiloi Assembly segment of Amethi.

Unfortunately, at Jais too Rahul had to face similar scenes of protest and slogan-raising by saffron brigade who jeered him with Modi-Modi slogans and showed placards – “Welcome to absconding MP”. The AICC President left from Jais too without even getting down from his vehicle.

Local Congress leaders alleged that the protest by the BJP was ‘pre-planned’ and local administration helped them to disrupt their leader’s programmes at both the places.  “Instead of arresting protestors, the police resorted to lathicharge on Congress workers,” alleged a local Congress leader.

They charged Union Minister Smriti Irani for sponsoring these protest against their leader. “It is state-sponsored ‘gundagardi’ by BJP goons. We will lodge a complaint in this regard with the Governor,” said another local Congress leader.

Earlier, BJP and Congress supporters fought pitched battle at Salon in Rae Bareli on Monday when Rahul held a ‘nukkad sabha’ at his mother’s parliamentary constituency on way to Amethi. Police had to use mild force to disperse protestors. Some of the BJP workers showed him black flags on his arrival in Amethi.

The AICC President held a janta darbar at Munshiganj Guest House in the morning. He met people of his parliamentary constituency and assured them of their solving their grievances. He also offered financial help to an old woman for the treatment of his son.

But the AICC President was unfazed by the BJP protest and held meetings with party workers at Jagdishpur and Tiloi before leaving for Delhi.
