Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday expressed solidarity with victims of the deluge in Chennai and distributed welfare assistance to them.
In a brief function, he distributed relief in a flood-hit residential neighbourhood off Mudichur in Chennai and also held an interaction with the beneficiaries who narrated their woes. He posed for pictures with an elderly flood-hit woman, shook hands with beneficiaries and also lifted a girl endearingly.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed briefly when he left the venue and stopped to wave at the residents waiting for him on the road. He had arrived at the venue off Mudichur by 3.45 PM after negotiating still-inundated bumpy roads from the airport where he had reached by 3.20 PM.
A security blanket was thrown around the neighbourhood since early this morning in view of the Congress leader's visit. He was accorded a warm welcome by Congress partymen led by state unit chief EVKS Elangovan and former Union Minister P Chidambaram.
