Congress which had been openly talking about Rahul Gandhi's elevation as the party President, on Thursday altered its stance on the matter, reports NDTV

Sources have reportedly said to the channel that Gandhi will be focusing on reviving the party following its 2014 Lok Sabha poll debacle. Rahul may not replace his mother Sonia Gandhi as the party chief until Bihar elections.

Sonia Gandhi who took over as the party head has been the party's longest serving president.

Congress' top decision body, the Working Committee is set to meet on Tuesday and expected to reduce tenure of the President from three to five years. Elections for the party posts must be held by the end of December , as per Election Commission rules.

The Congress vice-president had faced flak for being absent for the first leg of the Parliament session, after going on a break for at least two months. After his return he led the Opposition charge against the government over issues of Land Bill and recently on One Rank One Pension issue. The Opposition's continued protest over Vyapam scam and Lalit Modi and demand for resignation of EAM Sushma Swaraj, Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has stalled discussion on important bills like GST.
