Taking a dig at the BJP on the issue of unemployment, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that he’s waiting for the day when the Chinese youth will use Indian phones.

“I’m waiting for the day ‘Made in India’ gets displayed when Chinese youth turn their mobiles for taking selfies,” said Gandhi at a rally in Sirmour. Gandhi attended three rallies in Himachal — at Sirmour, Kangra and Chambal — apart from paying a visit to the Paonta Sahib.

In the last two days, the Congress has come under severe attack from the BJP, notably from PM Modi who has attacked the Congress on the issues of corruption, and even likened the Congress to ‘rakshas’ (demons) and ‘termites’.

He said PM Modi had promised over two crore jobs in election rallies, but is yet to keep his promise. “There are so many young men here without jobs. It is a major issue. Modi has failed to provide any jobs. He is simply working for the benefit of corporate majors. China has taken away our jobs. The Chinese government creates over 1 lakh jobs in a span of two days, while in India only 450 jobs are created in a day. Isn’t that shameful,” asked Rahul.

Comparing Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh on the basis of studies conducted by the Niti Aayog, Gandhi said that Himachal fars were in several parameters, including education and healthcare. “Unlike the BJP, we work very hard here in Himachal. Look at these numbers and you’ll know that the ‘Gujarat Model’ needs to be discarded,” said Gandhi.

He also criticised the BJP on the implementation of the GST and said the state’s economy, including apple traders are reeling under the effects of the tax. “We brought in the GST, so we are not against it. We simply said that the government should have conducted a pilot study,” he said.

On gst front

  • Rahul said the govt did not listen to Congress on GST, for which people are now facing the brunt
  • “When we come to power in 2019, we will make new tax regimepeople-friendly,” he said
