Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who took part in a 'padyatra' in drought-hit Bundelkhand, on Saturday accused the NDA government of being pro-industrialists and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to focus on welfare of the farmers and the poor.

"You must have seen Prime Minister Modi's 'selfies' with big businessmen but never with the poor, with farmers... I am here in Bundelkhand to bring in attention of SP Government in UP and Centre to Bundelkhand, where the farmers are suffering," Rahul said in his address.

"I would ask Modi ji to think a little for the farmers, labourers and the poor because they too run the country and it is not only industrialists who do so. So, think about them as well," he added.

He also urged the Prime Minister to visit Bundelkhand to see the plight of the farmers.

"Irrespective of which party is in power, I will continue to stand for the rights of our farmers," he said.

Rahul also took a swipe at Prime Minister Modi over Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula's suicide, asking why no action was taken against the Vice Chancellor of the Hyderabad University so far.

"Prime Minister Modi also got emotional, If he really feels sad then why has there been no action taken against the VC," he said.

Rohith, a second-year research scholar of Science, Technology and Society Studies Department, and others were suspended from the hostel last year following allegations that they attacked Sushil Kumar after the screening of a controversial documentary 'Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai'.

Earlier this month, five students were thrown out of the hostel after they accused the university authorities of denying them access to campus facilities, except their classrooms and workshops.

The 28-year-old victim from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district was found hanging at the hostel room of one of his friends around 7:30 pm on Sunday.
