Rae Bareli Lok Sabha Election results 2019 UP: Sonia Gandhi wins by 1,67,178 votes

Rae Bareli, a traditional Congress bastion, has sent many members of the Nehru-Gandhi family to Parliament.

The BJP fielded Congress turncoat Dinesh Pratap Singh to take on four-time MP and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Singh, a local strongman, was chosen by the BJP over Ajay Agarwal, a Supreme Court lawyer, who had contested from the seat in Uttar Pradesh's Awadh region in the 2014 general election. Top BJP leaders including party president Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath campaigned to garner support for Singh, trying to convince voters to switch from "the family" to usher in growth.

The constituency went to polls in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha election on May 6.

Constituency profile

Rae Bareli, one of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, will go to polls in the fifth phase of national elections on May 6. Known as the bastion of the Congress party, Rae Bareli Lok Sabha has been won by the party every time but twice since the first election here in 1957. 

Ashok Singh, a local politician from Rae Bareli won the seat in 1996 and 1998 elections. But in 1999 elections, the Congress fielded its family loyalist Captain Satish Sharma from the constituency and was able to snatch it back. Since 2004, UPA chairperson and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi has held the seat. 

The seat is known for sending leaders like Feroze Gandhi, his wife Indira Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru's sister-in-law Sheila Kaul and now Sonia Gandhi to Lok Sabha. Since contesting her first win from here in 2004 with a victoty margin of 2.5 lakh, Sonia Gandhi has retained her victory margin over 3 lakh votes. 

Former prime minister and the UPA chairperson's mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, had represented Rae Bareli from 1967 to 1977.

The Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency comprises five assembly segments: Bachhrawan (SC), Harchandpur, Rae Bareli, Sareni and Unchahar.

Lok Sabha Elections 2019: State Profile

In the last parliamentary elections in 2014, the BJP had won 71 seats in the state, securing 42.63 per cent of the votes. BJP ally Apna Dal bagged two more. The Samajwadi Party had won five seats with a vote share of 22.35 per cent. The BSP did not win any seat but secured 19.77 per cent votes. The Congress registered wins on two UP seats in 2014, bagging 7.53 per cent of the votes. 

UP is facing a triangular battle between the BJP, the Congress and BSP-SP-RLD alliance. Under the alliance's seat-sharing formula, the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting on 38 Lok Sabha seats of the total 80 seats, Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party on 37 seats and the Chaudhary Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on three seats. The alliance has left two for Congress' Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and Rahul Gandhi (Amethi).
