Radioactive leak detected at Delhi airport; operations at cargo terminal suspended

The Home Ministry has confirmed that the situation has been neutralised. Home Minister Rajnath Singh was quoted as saying that the leakage at cargo complex in IGI Airport was plugged​.

A leak of radioactive substance, which had come from Turkey, was detected at the cargo complex of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Friday.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was holding a news conference when news of the leak broke, said the atomic energy experts had been immediately dispatched to the scene

A leak was detected after a package containing nuclear medicine was damaged.

All operations at the cargo terminal of Delhi airport have been suspended, said PTI

An anti-sabotage team of the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF is on the spot.The site had been cordoned off by emergency services who put a blanket over the spill.

NDRF DG said, "We are Monitoring the whole situation. Radioactive substance came from Istanbul for Fortis Hospital whose authorities have been called," reported ANI.

According to PTI, sources said about four packets, out of the total ten, of a yellow-coloured liquid was suspected to have spread out of its sanitised container after the consignment landed at the cargo area of the airport at about 4:35 AM after which a special squad of the National Disaster Response Force team was called in to check and contain it.

In 2010, a mild radiation leak in a west Delhi industrial area had triggered panic in the capital after a scrap dealer and his three employees suffered burn injuries and fell unconscious after coming in contact with a mysterious shining object.
