The love for Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Geeti among Bengalis is widely known. But soon, for the people of South Dum Dum area near Kolkata, those melodies will be their new early morning alarm.

The South Dum Dum Municipality (SDDM) has come up with a plan to install public loudspeakers across its jurisdiction which will play the songs written by the two renowned poets – Rabindranath Thakur and Kazi Nazrul Islam – in early hours before dawn.

Currently, sound systems are being installed on a large scale in number 14 and 18 wards of the municipality, which will be operated from their designated ward office. Other than the songs, various announcements by the municipality will also be broadcasted through the speakers. The system will be inaugurated a day before Mahalaya which falls on September 28.

A total of 60 speakers have been installed in two wards and testing is going on.

The time schedule for playing these speakers have not been decided yet but discussions are on for choosing either 5 am or 4 am.

"Before the start of Durga Puja, people, both on the streets and in the comfort of their homes, can listen to the Mahishasurmardini legends. Gradually these sound systems will be installed in all 35 wards of SDDM," said chairman of the council, Prabir Pal.

The plan has invited both praises and criticism. Young people living in the area say that if Rabindra Sangeet and patriotic songs are played, then there will be enthusiasm in them every morning and might not even have the need to set an alarm anymore.

On the other hand, a local, Sumit Kumar (31), expressed concern for his sleep after a tiring night shift. "I sleep late in the morning as I usually get night shifts and if such speakers play at dawn, my sleep will be disturbed and my health may deteriorate," said Kumar.
