The elaborate arrangements made for fair board exams notwithstanding, the first paper of Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB)'s Intermediate exam 2018 was conducted amid a paper leak scare as Biology "questions" allegedly went viral on the social media some time after the exam started on Tuesday.

The BSEB denied any leak but admitted to "a part of the question paper" going viral two hours after the start of exam in Bihar's Nawada district.

BSEB chairman Anand Kishor said that the paper will not be cancelled as the process or sanctity of the exam was not affected. "The exam started at 9.45am and students were inside the hall around 9am. A probe by the Nawada district magistrate (DM) and superintendent of police (SP) said that reports of the questions going viral on social media came to light after 12.15pm. So, it can't be called a paper leak as students were already inside the hall and had no outside contact till the end of the exam," Kishor said.

Explaining Tuesday's "leak scare" Kishor said, "The examination centres have some extra question papers and it seems that someone mischievously made its copy and sent it outside. The Nawada DM and SP are probing the matter and the guilty will be booked." Kishor recalled a similar incident last year, in which some personnel conducting the exam were arrested.

Barring a few isolated incidents of cheating, Day 1 of BSEB's Intermediate exams, being taken by 12.07 lakh students at 1,384 centres across the state, passed off peacefully. Kishor said reports pouring in from the districts said that the students and guardians were cooperating in conducting fair exams. "Many of the DMs reported that very few unwanted materials have been found during random frisking and checks and examinees are generally cooperative," Kishor said. The Intermediate exams will conclude on February 16.

Attacking the government, leader of the opposition in Bihar legislative Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said, "Nitish Kumar's administration was totally aware of it but still decided to go ahead with exam rather than cancelling it. Nitishji, stop playing with the future of Bihari students, it's not your politics."

It may be recalled that the BSEB has been in the eye of the storm over "undeserving toppers" and "mass cheating in exams" for the past few years.
