Punjab's Gurdaspur district, which was targeted by Pakistani terrorists last July, was on high alert on Wednesday night and security forces were on the lookout for "two men in army uniform" who had been reportedly seen by locals moving in a suspicious manner in a village.

Some locals in Tibri reported in the day that "two men in army uniform" had been sighted near a cantonment area, police said. A farmer Satnam Singh of Pandher village was the one to make the claim first, saying he had seen two suspected two persons in Tibri while he was working in the fields, police said.

Pandher village is situated about one-and-a-half km away from the Tibri cantonment. Police immediately reported the matter to Army and a joint search operation was launched, said SSP Gurpreet Singh. Till midnight, no suspected person was found and the search operation was suspended till the morning. However, cordon of the area continues, the SSP said.

There were reports earlier that five terrorists had sneaked into the border area of Gurdaspur and Pathankot, following which army formations have been put on alert, officials said. Gurdaspur was targeted by Pakistani terrorists in July last year also when they struck at a police station here. Six terrorists in army fatigues attacked the Air Base in Pathankot on Saturday last, leading to an encounter that lasted over four days.
