Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa who took over as the jails and co-operation minister last week, revealed that he received a congratulatory call from a prison inmate lodged in one of the state's jails.

“I received a congratulatory call from an inmate lodged in one of the jails in the state,” the minister told Indian Express.

The minister, when asked if knew the caller, also said that the caller was known to him, otherwise, why would he call.

The minister also said that he would take up the issue with the Centre. “I am observing the scenario. Mobile phones inside jails is true beyond any doubt. It is a big menace and it will not be addressed till the latest jammers are installed,” he said.

Special courts inside jails, steps to check mobile and drug use among inmates, speedy redressal of pending parole cases and appointment of psychologists to counsel prisoners were some of the steps promised by newly-appointed Punjab minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa today.

Randhawa, who took over as the jails and co-operation minister yesterday, announced the steps as part of the state government's initiative to reform the jail system.

On Wednesday, the minister paid a surprise visit to the central jail in Patiala and promised to set-up special courts inside jails, steps to check mobile and drug use among inmates, speedy redressal of pending parole cases and appointment of psychologists to counsel prisoners.

He said regular contact will be maintained with the Union government for upgrading the jammers installed in jails from 3G to 4G to check the use of mobile phones by inmates. He said modalities were also being worked out to set up special courts inside jails for speedy trials.
