Gurdaspur attack: Terror strikes Punjab, SP among 8 dead, 3 militants killed

The gunmen are heavily armed and are carrying automatic weapons with them, said TV reports quoting sources. So far, no group has taken responsibility of the attack. Police has increased the security and the area has been cordon off.

In the first major terror strike in Punjab in eight years, heavily-armed militants in army uniform on Monday sprayed bullets on a moving bus and stormed a police station, killing six persons, including an SP, and injuring eight others in Gurdaspur bordering Pakistan.

One militant was killed and another seriously injured in the gunbattle with security forces that stretched for over 10 hours as the terrorists, who went of a rampage at around 5 AM, were holed up in a vacant building adjacent to Dinanagar police station.

The terrorists have killed six persons-- three civilians and three policemen including Superintendent of Police (Detective), Baljit Singh, a Punjab provincial service officer, police said.

According to Punjab Police IG (Counter Intelligence) Gaurav Yadav, SP Baljit Singh succumbed to bullet injuries sustained in the gunbattle.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed expressed shock and grief over the terror attack in Punjab's Gurdaspur, in which seven persons, including an SP, were killed while all the terrorists were gunned down after a day-long operation.

Condemning the attack, the Chief Minister called for greater cooperation and sharing of information between the states to counter such incidents in future which threaten the safety and security of the innocent people.

Extending support to his Punjab counterpart Parkash Singh Badal in this hour of grief, Sayeed said his prayers are with the families of those who lost their dear ones in the attack.

The Chief Minister conveyed his heart-felt sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls

The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that it is likely that the terrorists involved in the Gurdaspur terror attack, which has claimed the lives of several civilians and police personnel, might be a linked to terror outfits LeT or Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team chanted victory slogans after the Gurdaspur terror attack came to an end this evening following a fierce gun battle between the army and militants.

A high alert has been sounded at the border posts in Pithoragarh and Champawat districts, having a 241 km long border with Nepal, in the wake of a terror attack in Gurdaspur district of Punjab on Monday.

"We have sounded an alert in the district and at all the border posts along the porous Indo-Nepal border, keeping in mind the possibility of terrorists sneaking in from Nepal border into Indian territory. We are coordinating with the SSB, ITBP, Army and local intelligence units in this connection and have instructed the special task operation force officers (SOTF), main force safeguarding the Indo-Nepal border," Pithoragarh SP, Roshan Lal Sharma said.

Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh on Monday condemned the terrorist attack in Punjab's Gurdaspur, in which eight persons including a superintendent of police, were killed.

"These incidents are the handiwork of elements trying to create disturbances in the country," Singh said in a statement.

"We should condemn such acts as are being carried out by the forces inimical to peace and tranquillity and are aimed at creating an atmosphere of fear in the country," he added.

Singh said these forces would be strictly dealt with so that these violent incidents do not reoccur. He appealed to the people of the state to maintain their century-old brotherhood and amity.

According to reports, the gunbattle in Gurdaspur has ended after nearly 12 hours and 10 people have been killed in this siege. All of the gunmen involved in the attack were dead.

A red alert has been issued across Assam following a terror attack in Gurudaspur district of Punjab, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Monday.

"The Punjab attack is very unfortunate and we condemn it. We have issued a red alert across the state following the attack," Gogoi said.

Talking about terror outfits in the state, he said there were anti-social elements present and they kept trying to create disturbance.

"ULFA, NDFB, Jehadis - all are trying to disturb the peace and development of the state. However, we have been able to control them successfully. We have sought more central forces to better manage the law and order situation," Gogoi said.

Asked about the presence of Islamic State militants in Assam, the chief minister said that though they had sneaked into the state, they did not pose a threat yet.

"They have not become a threat yet in Assam. IS is currently present in every state of the country," he said.

Militancy is a national problem, says CM Prakash singh Badal

Speaking to the news agency, Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal said, "This is very sad. Militancy is a national problem and not state problem."

However, putting the onus on the Centre and the security forces, Badal said that terrorists didn't come from Punjab and came from border. It is their (MHA) job to seal the border.

Attack details cannot be given at this stage, says Rudy

Terming the supsected terror attack in Gurdaspur as a "very serious issue", Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said no details can be given at this stage as the operation against perpetrators of the attack is still on.

"Operations are still on. So we can't give details. But many MPs requested that the status be given in Parliament. The MPs have given a notice so that they be made aware of the situation," Rudy said.

Addressing the media, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma called the Gurdaspur incident as intellegence failure. He said, "The terror attack raises many question over the intentions of Pakistan. We condemn the loss of lives and we express our solidarity towards all the victim families."

He further said that the recent incidence in Kashmir valley of raising of Pakistani flags can't be tolerated.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said, "Encounter is still underway. Terrorists are holed up in an abandoned house. Central paramilitary forces have been rushed to the spot."
