Terming the death of five newborns at Ludhiana Civil Hospital as "complete criminal neglect", Punjab Congress on Monday sought resignation of state Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jyani over the incident.
"Punjab Congress demands immediate resignation of state Health Minister for the death of newborns at Ludhiana Civil Hospital," Punjab Congress President Partap Singh Bajwa said in Chandigarh on Monday. Describing the incident as "complete criminal neglect," Bajwa said he condemns the death of newborns in the strongest words.
"Ludhiana is the economic capital of Punjab. If such type of incidents can happen here then you can very well imagine what will be the state of affairs in other parts of the state," he said. He accused the SAD-BJP regime of having totally failed in the administration of the state.
"The state is total mismanaged under the reigns of Akalis. There is complete 'jungle raj' (lawlessness)," the former Gurdaspur MP alleged. Bajwa said President's Rule should be imposed in the state as SAD-BJP-led government is a "complete failure" in discharging its responsibilities.
Meanwhile, condoling the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Amritsar said he had ordered an inquiry into the incident. Badal said he had asked the officers to ascertain the causes and circumstances which led to the deaths and submit the inquiry report at the earliest.
He said if any laxity is found on the part of any public servant, he or she would not be spared and brought to book as per the law of the land. Four new-born infants died at the Ludhiana Civil Hospital yesterday.
Hospital's gynaecologist head Alka Mittal had yesterday said that the babies died "during the process of delivery".
The families had alleged that in the absence of gynaecologist, the deliveries were facilitated by class IV employees, a claim which was denied by the doctors.
