Pune | Vacation turns tragic, 9 of a family among 13 dead in Kolhapur accident

Out of 13 dead, nine were members of a single family residing in Pune's Balewadi.

A pall of gloom descended on old Balewadi area after news of 13 people dying in road mishap in Kolhapur reached Pune on Saturday. Out of 13 dead, nine were members of a single family residing in Balewadi. They were returning from Ganpatipule to Pune when their bus fell into Panchganga river in Kolhapur on Friday night. 

Out of 13 deceased, there are seven children. The deceased have been identified as Sachin Bharat Kedari (34), Nilam Sachin Kedari (28), Sanskriti Sachin Kedari (8), Sanidhya Sachin Kedari (9 months), Bhawana Dilip Kedari (35), Sahil Dilip Kedari (14), Shravani Dillip Kedari (11), Chhaya Dinesh Nangre (14), Pratik Dinesh Nangre (14), Santosh Babanrao Warkhede (45), Gauri Santosh Warkhede (16), Dnyaneshwari Santosh Warkhede (14) and a bus driver (identity is yet to be ascertained). 

Three people also sustained injuries who have been identified as Manda Bharat Kedari (54), Manisha Santosh Warkhede (38) and Prajakta Dinesh Nangre (18). 

The accident took place at around 11.45 pm on Friday night. 

According to Kolhapur police, the mishap took place at Shivaji bridge on Panchganga river. "There were 16 people in the bus including the driver. They had gone to Ganpatipule for a trip and on Friday, they were returning to Pune," a senior police officer from Kolhapur police said. 

"When their bus reached Shivaji Bridge, the driver lost control over the bus and it hit the retaining wall of the bride. The bus broke the wall and fell into the river. The bus landed towards the end of riverbed therefore part of the bus got into the water while rear part hit the land. The three injured persons were sitting on the rear seat and therefore they escaped with injuries but rest of the passengers died," the police officer said. 

As the news of death of 13 people reached old Balewadi area, the residents were in shell shock as nine of the deceased were from Balewadi. Amol Balwadkar, local resident told DNA, "The Kedari family was from Balewadi area and the entire family had gone on vacation. In this mishap, injured Manda Kedari have lost her son, daughter in law and grandchildren in front of her eyes."
