Pune starts fire audit of properties post Kamala Mills tragedy in Mumbai

A consolidated report has to be submitted by January 15.

On the backdrop of Kamala Mills fire tragedy, the Pune Municipal Corporation has decided to address the issue of illegal commercial use of properties. PMC commissioner has ordered a survey and fire audit of all such properties in PMC limits.

In his order issued on Saturday, PMC commissioner Kunal Kumar has asked city engineer, health department head and fire chief to form teams to carry out the audit and has asked to submit consolidated report by January 15, 2018.  "The incident of Kamala Mills fire was very unfortunate and in order to make sure that such incident does not take place in Pune, the PMC has decided to carry out the fire audit of those properties which has got no objection certificate from fire department, the properties where unauthorised commercial activities are taking place," Kumar in his order has stated. 

The civic chief has asked the chief of fire department to form various teams as per the requirement and start fire audit of all such properties immediately. The commissioner has also directed the chief engineer to issue orders to every assistant commissioner of his department to check for the unauthorised use of properties in his or her respective zones. Similarly, the health department head has been asked to issue orders to all the health inspectors to visit all such places where there is heavy footfall of visitors and check for any such unauthorised use of properties.  The commissioner has warned of disciplinary action against the officials who will be found not performing duty diligently.
