Eyebrows were raised in the Shivajinagar Court in Pune on Sunday when Sameer Kulkarni — one of the accused in the Malegaon blast case — was seen attending the hearing of the Dabholkar murder case, when Sachin Andure was brought to the court on Sunday.

Kulkarni was present in the court long before the court proceedings began. When the police allowed entry into the courtroom, Kulkarni was seen sitting right next to Pravin Andure, brother of Sachin Andure arrested in Dabholkar murder case by the CBI on Saturday.

Kulkarni sat in the courtroom for the entire proceeding and was later seen talking with Andure's defence lawyer. When asked about his presence in the court, Kulkarni said, "The defence lawyer is new to the city and he did not know the route of the court here, therefore, I came along with him to take him to the court."

Pune-based Kulkarni is one of the 14 accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case in which six people were killed and 101 were injured. The prosecution had claimed that Kulkarni had arranged the chemicals used in the explosives and he was arrested in October 2008. Later, on September 29, 2017, a special NIA Court dropped the charges against Kulkarni under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) as well as other accused including Lt Col Prasad Purohit and Sadhvi Pragya.

In October 2017, Kulkarni was granted bail by the sessions court in Mumbai on the grounds of parity as Lt Col Purohit, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and Major (Retd) Ramesh Upadhyay, the other accused in the case had already got the bail.
