A newborn baby is battling for life after receiving 80 percent burn injuries when the warmer in which she was placed, overheated.

Following the incident, a case of negligent conduct has been registered against the doctor and staff of the private hospital.

The incident came to light on Tuesday when parents of the baby girl approached Vishrambaug police and lodged a complaint.

Based on the complaint, police have registered a case against Dr Gaurav Chopade and others under Section 287 for negligent conduct with respect to machinery and 338 for causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others under the Indian Penal code. According to the police, the infant's condition remains critical.

Complainant Vijendra Kadam's wife was admitted to Vatsalya hospital, where she delivered a baby girl on Tuesday morning. The delivery was through cesarean section. After the delivery, doctors told the parents that their infant had breathing complications for which she would have to be kept in a warmer with an oxygen mask.

According to the parents, when they went to see the baby in the room after some time, everything appeared to be normal. However, as soon as they stepped out of the room, they heard what sounded like a mini explosion, and rushed to see the baby.

As they rushed into the room, they saw smoke coming out of the warmer where their child was kept. An officer from Vishrambaug police station said, "Seeing the smoke, the family panicked and raised an alarm to call the doctor.

The doctors and the hospital staff rushed to the room, and took the baby out of the warmer but she had already sustained serious burn injuries."

Considering the critical nature of the injuries, the baby was shifted to another hospital, where she is now battling for life. "The baby has sustained 80 percent burns," says the officer. "Initial probe reveals that the warmer over heated due to a short circuit. Further investigation is still on."
