The Pune police commissioner on Sunday announced that a senior officer had been appointed to address the issues faced by Kashmiri students in the city. The move comes a week after Dineshwar Sharma, the interlocutor appointed by the Central government to Jammu & Kashmir, visited Pune to meet the students and address the problems they face in the city.

During his visit to Pune, the interlocutor also met city police commissioner Rashmi Shukla and asked her to address the issues faced by Kashmiri students. Pune, a town full of several universities, has students coming from all over the country to study there. There are also several working professionals from the state working in the city.

On Saturday, Shukla met with the students to address their issues. Through them, she learned that they faced discrimination from people, even police officers, because of their hometown.

One youth, who works in the city, claimed that his friend was picked up by a police officer just because he came from Kashmir. “He was studying in one of the colleges and he never indulged in any anti-social activities but he was picked by police after they found out that he was from Kashmir," the youth said.

Another youth who is studying in one of the reputed city colleges said, "Since I had some previous experience of working in BPO, I applied at a private company for job but the moment they saw my home state is Kashmir on my resume, they refused me a job," he alleged.

Some youths stated that they feel much safe in Pune compare to other cities of the country but sometimes people brand these youths as supporters of terrorists. "I am often asked if all Kashmiris carry guns. I am an Indian and I want to proudly say that but whenever people target Kashmiri people like me, I have to take a step back," he added.

Shukla assured the students to take some steps to create mechanism to address Kashmiri youths' problems. "I will be appointing a senior police officer who will be either of a rank of assistant commissioner of police or senior inspector who will work as coordinator between Kashmiri youths and government agencies. This is not mine or your city, it is our city. Everyone wants safety and peace. Pune is the city where you get safety and peace. We will work together to make it a better place for Kashmiris," she said.
