The Publications Division, under the ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) may soon bring out books to highlight unsung heroes of the country, most of whom have played major roles in India's independence from the erstwhile British rule.

In a consultative committee meeting on Friday, I&B minister Venkaiah Naidu emphasised the need to highlight the contribution of several such people who had contributed to the country's freedom, but have largely gone unnoticed by the masses, through books published by the publications division.

Publications Divisions which provides books at subsidised prices, has a good collection of books on Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and the Gandhi family. More recently, it has come out with books on Bharatiya Jan Sangh leader Deen Dayal Upadhaya.

According to sources, three names had cropped up, whose contribution could be highlighted through the Publications Division books.

"One of them was the contribution of Indian revolutionaries Chapekar brothers -- Damodar Hari, Balkrishna Hari Chapekar and Vasudeo Hari, who were instrumental in assassination of WC Rand, the then British plague commissioner of Pune," a senior official said.

The official added that names like Birsa Munda and Alluri Sitarama Raju were also discussed during the meeting.

Tribal freedom fighter Munda had led a massive movement against the British Raj in what is Bihar, Jharkhand today, Raju had also fought for freedom from the British rule and killed many British army officers in Andhra Pradesh. He was captured and eventually shot dead in a forest.

During the meeting, the possibility of Publications Division approaching corporates and ask them to sponsor books for achools and libraries as part of their corporate social responsibility was discussed by the I&B minister.
