In what is being recommended as 'a very rare case', Panjab University (PU) has decided to bend rules to allow Chandigarh's DGP Tajender Singh Luthra to take admission in LLB Semester 5 without clearing Semester 4 examination at his alma mater.

In his special request to PU, Luthra who is the first DGP of Chandigarh, had sought permission for admission in LLB Semester 5 to earn his graduation degree.

A former student of LLB at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut from 2014 to 2016, Luthra contended that he had to leave his studies due to professional exigencies and commitments.

While submitting a certificate from the institution that he has completed the 75 per cent attendance requirement in Semester 4, Luthra said he could not appear for the semester examination due to professional commitment.

A special three-member committee was constituted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Arun Kumar Grover to take a final call on the issue. The committee's recommendations were discussed in the university's Syndicate, which decided to allow Luthra to take admission, highlighting that he had already completed half of his course.

The university administration on Saturday decided to bend the rules and allow Luthra to take admission in LLB Semester 5 (evening course), but necessitated that he will have to appear for Semester 4 examinations as a re-appear candidate.

A 1990 batch AGMUT cadre officer, he was appointed the Chandigarh IGP in February 2016, and was later was promoted as the DGP. He was earlier the Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police (PM Security) at New Delhi.

Since he is posted as the DGP in Chandigarh, he could not attend classes at his former university in Meerut to complete the LLB degree, he requested the university to allow him to take admission there.

Zeal for Education

DGP Tajendar Singh Luthra was studying LLB Semester 4 in Meerut before he was posted to Chandigarh.
To continue his studies, he requested PU to let him take admission in Sem 5.
