At a time when the Narendra Modi-led government is facing attack from the Opposition over Dalit and minority issues, the BJP on Saturday sought to promote what it called party's "pro-poor" and "good governance" agenda.

During a one-day meeting of BJP-ruled state chief ministers, deputy chief ministers and party state unit presidents here, PM Modi said that centrally-sponsored schemes should be executed in best possible manner by the states.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, quoting the PM told reporters here that Modi emphasised "on bringing the poor under the social security network" besides asking the party CMs to encourage use of LED bulbs for power saving, skill development, girl child care, work towards attracting more investment under the new tax regime and speed up development projects.

BJP national president Amit Shah while addressing the CMs' meeting said that the party has started a new era of "politics of performance" in the country.

At the first such meeting after Modi came to power in May 2014, Shah told the participants that the government has "secured the country's borders, have spread the Indian culture abroad and taken the GDP beyond 7.6 per cent".

The agenda of Saturday's meeting's was set by PM Modi and Shah themselves.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who later held a press conference, quoted Shah as saying that "BJP-ruled states can be instruments of change as the party rules over 37 per cent population and 52 per cent landmass in the country."

Fadnavis said that in a little over two years, Modi government has initiated 80 new schemes for people's welfare prominent amongst them being ones such as Mudra Yojana, Make in India, Stand up India and Start up India.

Quoting Shah's speech to BJP CMs further, Fadnavis said, "Unlike previous governments, our government is in no dilemma. We have created a good balance of focusing on urban and rural development together. Similarly, we have struck a balance between promoting big industries as well as small and medium industries. The government is not stuck in the dilemma of welfare and reforms. Both can happen simultaneously."

Every CM, he told reporters, has been asked to put forward the new governance ideas that can be initiated in their respective states. BJP national vice-president and Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said that to give the party's welfare agenda for poor a final shape, a committee comprising Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Chouhan, Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and him will soon be formed.

The day long-meeting also had a session on BJP-ruled state governments' presence on the social media. Senior ministers from the Union cabinet Manohar Parrikar, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari and Arun Jaitley too attended the meeting.

Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje did not attend the meeting and was represented by a senior minister of the state cabinet.
