A senior professor from the Indian Institute of Bombay (IIT B) has expressed concerns over "the rampant cheating" allegedly going on in the examinations conducted at the country's premiere institute.

The letter is addressed to the institute's director with copies marked to Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister and Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Bombay. It states: "As per my knowledge, there is rampant cheating going on in most of the examinations conducted at IIT Bombay. It is painful to learn from my colleagues that they have even searched the toilets and discovered some hidden material in the form of notes that some students planned to use on the pretext of using the toilets at the time of the exams."

IIT-B Director Devang Khakhar refused to comment on the issue.

The professor has also stated in the letter that students are often found using mobile phones during exams despite guidelines against using them on the campus.

"Besides secretively passing notes in the examination halls, several students are reading the files stored on their mobile phones carried surreptitiously into the examination halls."

It also goes on to say that on several occasions "impostors have appeared in the examination halls to help out their friends".

The letter goes on to suggest some measures to restore the credibility of the system. "There is not much that we the faculty have been able to do to prevent dishonest students from cheating in the exams, and it appears that a substantial part of the academic system at IIT Bombay now stands compromised. Drastic measures need to be adopted to restore the credibility of the system -- perhaps by employing anti-cheating squads along the lines of anti-Romeo squads employed by Yogi Adityanath in UP," says the letter.

"The current situation as it prevails at IIT Bombay is a stigma on the reputation of this esteemed institute and makes many of us hang our heads in shame," it adds.

While the professor could not be reached for comment despite several calls, another senior faculty member from the institute said that the concerns raised in the letter are genuine. "Day after day, students are finding newer ways and means to cheat in exams. Such things at a prestigious institute like IIT-B where only the highly meritorious can get through is extremely sad," said the professor, who did not wish to be named.
